Will AI Take Your Engineering Job — Before You Even Get One?

Every parent researching B.Tech CSE, AI & ML, or Data Science this admission season has read a scary headline. Here’s what the data actually says — and the exact roadmap Studytrek gives its students to stay unreplaceable.

Short answer: the panic is real, the data is mixed, and the outcome is entirely in the student’s hands. Let’s walk through it properly — the way we’d sit down and explain it to a family at our Dwaraka Nagar office.

01 The Global Alarm Bells — Why Parents Are Worried

The fear isn’t manufactured. In the United States, the numbers genuinely shifted over the last two years, and this is the data circulating in every WhatsApp forward:

US Unemployment — Recent Grads (2026)
Computer Science graduates6.1%

Computer Engineering graduates7.5%

All recent college graduates (avg.)4.8%

US staffing-industry leaders now describe generative AI as a genuine turning point for early-career programmers specifically, because coding work is unusually structured and therefore easy for AI tools to absorb. A Stanford Digital Economy Lab study using payroll data from over 3.5 million American workers found early-career employment softening most sharply in AI-exposed technical roles. Employer surveys back this up: 70% of hiring managers in one industry survey said AI can now do the work of a typical intern, and internship postings on Handshake have fallen roughly 30% since 2023.

That’s the headline story making parents anxious. But it is an American story, shaped by an American hiring correction after a pandemic-era hiring boom. India’s tech employment engine runs on a different logic — and the data proves it.

02 The India Story Is Genuinely Different

India isn’t shrinking its entry-level tech pipeline — it’s restructuring where the jobs sit, and rewarding a narrower set of skills more richly than ever.

India’s three largest IT employers alone are hiring tens of thousands of freshers this year — TCS is targeting around 42,000, Infosys over 20,000, and Wipro roughly 10,000–12,000 — largely through campus placements, the TCS NQT national test, and off-campus drives. Meanwhile GCCs, the captive India-based tech arms of global firms like Google, JPMorgan and Deloitte, are paying fresh engineers ₹11–15 LPA and taking a growing share of every hiring cycle.

The catch: fewer than 3% of India’s roughly 1.5 million annual engineering graduates currently have real, demonstrable AI/ML skills, even as demand for exactly those skills triples. That gap is not a threat to your child — it is the single biggest opportunity in this market right now.

03 So — Do Students and Parents Need to Worry?

Worry about the right thing, not the wrong thing. Nobody needs to worry that “AI will make CSE/AI&ML/Data Science pointless.” Employability in these streams remains the highest of any engineering discipline in India, and demand for AI-literate talent is growing faster than supply.

What families should worry about is a student graduating with only classroom knowledge and a CGPA — no projects, no cloud or AI tool fluency, no portfolio. That profile is genuinely more vulnerable today than it was five years ago, because AI has quietly eaten the “easy,” repetitive tasks that used to be a junior engineer’s on-ramp. The floor has moved up. Students now need to enter the workforce already doing a little of what used to take a year to learn on the job.

04 The New Rules of the Hiring Game

Three structural shifts explain almost everything happening in tech hiring right now — understand these, and the “AI will take my job” fear becomes something you can actually plan around.

1. Skills beat CGPA, decisively

As of 2026, 70% of employers use skills-based hiring for entry-level roles, and less than half still use a minimum CGPA as a screening filter — down from nearly three-quarters just a few years ago. Recruiters want to see what a candidate has built, not just what grade they scored.

2. AI is a tool employers expect you to already use

Only 11% of employers globally are actively discussing replacing roles with AI. The much larger shift — over two-thirds of employers — is about how AI changes the tasks inside a job. Practically, this means interviewers now expect familiarity with AI-assisted coding, prompt engineering, and AI-augmented workflows as baseline literacy, the way spreadsheet skills once were.

3. Specialisation pays a real, measurable premium

Generalist “IT fresher” roles in India are commoditised and pay accordingly. Freshers with demonstrated AI/ML or GenAI skills command a 25–40% salary premium over classical software roles, and cloud-certified freshers routinely move from the ₹4 LPA bracket into the ₹12–15 LPA bracket. Depth in one area — not a shallow list of buzzwords — is what recruiters pay for.

05 How to Combat It: A Year-by-Year Action Plan

This is the exact framework our counsellors walk families through once a seat is confirmed.

Year 1Foundation

Build fluency, not just familiarity

Python, statistics, and SQL — properly, not superficially. Get comfortable using AI coding assistants as a tool from day one, since employers now assume this baseline literacy.

Year 2Direction

Pick a lane and go deep

Choose one: AI/ML engineering, data science, cloud, or cybersecurity. Start a GitHub portfolio. One real, working project beats five completed certificates with nothing to show.

Year 3Proof

Get an industry-recognised certification

AWS/Azure/GCP for cloud, or applied ML/GenAI certificates. Certified freshers see 15–30% better placement outcomes. Pursue at least one internship — conversion rates run 40–70% for strong performers.

Year 4Launch

Target intentionally, not broadly

Map GCCs and product companies alongside traditional IT services majors. Prepare 4–5 STAR-format stories from real projects for interviews — this is now weighted more heavily than GPA.

Do
  • Ship 2–3 real, deployed projects before final year
  • Learn to work with AI tools, not around them
  • Choose a specialisation and go deep, not wide
  • Get at least one internship, even if unpaid or low-stipend
Don’t
  • Rely on CGPA alone as your differentiator
  • Collect certificates without building anything
  • Ignore soft skills — communication is now a hiring filter
  • Wait until final year to start building a portfolio
“

Parents keep asking me if AI has made engineering a risky bet. I tell them the honest thing: it hasn’t made engineering risky — it’s made average engineering risky. The data backs this up on both sides. India is still adding lakhs of tech jobs a year, and AI/ML postings are growing faster than almost any other category. But the graduates who only did the minimum — no projects, no specialisation, no comfort with AI tools — are the ones showing up in the unemployment statistics. This is exactly why our counselling at Studytrek doesn’t stop at “which college.” We map the specialisation, the certifications, and the placement track record together, because in 2026, the college name alone doesn’t get you the offer letter anymore — your proof of work does.

06 Quick Answers For Parents

Is CSE still worth choosing over other engineering branches?

Yes — CSE and IT graduates still lead every other engineering stream in employability, at over 80%, according to the India Skills Report 2026. The branch isn’t the risk; an unspecialised, project-less degree is.

Should my child pick AI & ML / Data Science over core CSE?

Either works, provided there’s real specialisation depth by final year. AI/ML-focused freshers currently earn a 25–40% premium over generalist IT roles, but core CSE graduates who specialise later (via certifications or projects) access the same premium.

Will AI eliminate the need for engineers altogether?

No credible data supports this for India specifically. AI is projected to add roughly 3.8 lakh new AI-linked roles in India in 2026 alone. The technology is reshaping which tasks juniors do, not eliminating the need for skilled engineers who can build, operate, and govern these systems.

What should we look for in a college beyond rankings?

Industry-collaborated curricula (Microsoft, TCS, Red Hat-style partnerships), verified placement data by specialisation — not just headline packages, and internship pipelines. This is exactly the diligence Studytrek runs before recommending an institution to a family.
